Depth of Knowledge
Webb's Depth of Knowledge (DOK) provides a vocabulary and a frame of reference when thinking about our students and how they engage with the content. DOK offers a common language to understand "rigor," or cognitive demand, in assessments, as well as curricular units, lessons, and tasks. Webb developed four DOK levels that grow in cognitive complexity and provide educators a lens on creating more cognitively engaging and challenging tasks.

Assignment:
- Students will create a gladiolus fan spray using the following floral recipe:
- Large white mâché bucket
- Two whole blocks of Oasis floral foam
- Waterproof tape
- One and half bunches of leatherleaf fern
- Seven stems of gladiolus
- Six stems of delphinium
- Five stems of asiatic lily
- Large white mâché bucket
Assignment:
- Based on your current knowledge from class, evaluate the five vases of flora products presented and sort them into two groups (short vs. long vase life).
Level 3: Strategic Thinking
At this level of complexity, students must use planning and evidence, and thinking is more abstract. A task with multiple valid responses where students must justify their choices would be Level 3. Examples include solving non-routine problems, designing an experiment, or analyzing characteristics of a genre.

Assignment:
- Student's will compare and contrast the following floral terms: positive space and negative space. As well as explain the difference between mass flower and fan flower arrangements.
Level 4: Extended ThinkingLevel 4 tasks require the most complex cognitive effort. Students synthesize information from multiple sources, often over an extended period of time, or transfer knowledge from one domain to solve problems in another. Designing a survey and interpreting the results, analyzing multiple texts by to extract themes, or writing an original myth in an ancient style would all be examples of Level 4.

Assignment:
- Floral showpieces are typically constructed with flowers of long vase life, pushing designers' creativity to avoid similarity.
- Conduct an investigation on how to include floral products with short vase lives for exhibits that favor flowers with long vase lives.
